New season update...

Well - the winter league came and went - I had a few subs, and didn't lose any of them - 3 wins and a half! In fact, I'm now teaming up with one half of one of the teams for next year... Handicap is now 14.5 after the annual review, so effectively 15. I'm happy with that, and have already shot two 39 points, but also a couple of bad ones. First qualifying competition is next Saturday, and I'm also going to try and get in a team to play some other courses. Watch this space...

Winter Leagues

Well, the winter season is upon us, and I've helped out a couple of Winter League teams by subbing for them. One all square, and one win, so a 100% record so far :) Got another one on Sunday...

Done it - surprisingly!!

Well - had a shock on arrival to the club yesterday. Not sure why I did it, but I went in to check the handicap list, even though I'd not played any rounds since my last cut to 15.5. I was shocked to see that I've been given another cut to 14.5 !! So that is it, target reached, and I still have the non-qualifying winter rounds to try and get it down further.

Not sure what happened, but the club pro seems to think it was an 'annual review' cut, given that I'm consistenly shooting to within my handicap +2 strokes - which under CONGU regulation, gives the club the permission for a discretionary cut.

However it happened - I was on cloud 9 yesterday, and proceeded to shoot a 34 pointer (+2 on my new handicap of 15)... With 2 non-scoring holes, and very poor putting - that gives me a massive confidence boost that I can get down to single figures within the next year. So - that is now my new target - 9... Winter League

Well - the final comp is over, I've managed to come down to 15.5 from 24 in March, and the Winter League begins at my club.

I didn't get a team together, but I've put myself down as a substitute so that I get a game every weekend, and hopefully meet a few friends along the way.

Its a new format for me though, team based matchplay, fourball betterball. Should be fun... :)

15.5 !! And my best round ever...

Early finish for me from work, having some time in lieu for working through last weekend, so I fixed up a quick game with a mate for 3:15. I arrived early, so decided to check the board for last Sundays Medal round where I shot the nett 72. Not enough for a place, there was a 68,69 and 71 to get those spots, but I was shocked to see the CSS for the day had been pushed up to 75!! So, that gave me a 0.9 cut, down to 15.5.

0.1 from my target for the season - I started on 24 in Feb/March when I started this game properly after a 10 year break.

After that bombshell, I picked up my clubs and made my way up to the course, but when I saw the state of the practice green, I actually laighed out loud. Hollow tined, and spread with the sand/seed mix with hardly any grass visible, I almost jacked it in and went home. I putt a few balls though, and while there was a difference, the balls were running pretty well on the surface, so I bit the bullet, waited for my mate, and set out.

Well, what a round, no lost balls, no blobs, just 2 doubles, 5 singles, 9 pars and a birdie to finish on the final par 5. Gross 81, nett 65 !! The scoring was good for me, but it was the ball striking that I was most happy about. Aside from the usual handful of mis-hits, fat chips, wayward drives, I was hitting the ball where I wanted it to go! Peppering the flags in regulation, even driving a par 4 green on one hole, and the final birdie was a massive, glorious drive, followed by my best shot of the day, the sweetest contact with a 4 iron from the fairway over a hill to a blind green. It was so good, it actually ran through the back requiring a 40ft chip up a 4ft bank to within 12 inches of the hole.

Good company, fine weather, great golf - do afternoons get much better than that?
